Demystifying Infant Frenectomy - A Glimpse into the Procedure and Its Expectations

Successful breast-feeding depends on multiple factors. One issue that can adversely affect the newborn's ability to obtain a correct latch is the presence of a tongue or a lip tie. An overly tight frenum may cause nipple pain, compressed or injured nipples and even mastitis. In addition, the newborn may make clicking noises with nursing, may have prolong feeding sessions, may have inadequate weight gain or may demonstrate irritability during and after breastfeeding. In newborns, the tightness in the lip or the tongue frenum can be released with a procedure called a frenectomy.

Dr. Jah uses a Light Scalpel CO2 laser for infant frenectomies and has received training through The Breathe Institute which utilizes the most up to date procedures and research. We work closely with lactation consultants to further elevate success in infant feeding after the release.

What To Expect

Your first appointment with Dr. Jah will be a functional evaluation of your baby’s oral motor function. He may observe your baby feeding from a bottle and will request prior information from your lactation consultant. If you are not working with one currently, we can connect you with a local, knowledgeable International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). In most cases, if you are not established with lactation, the procedure will not be performed the same day as the evaluation.

After the procedure, it is vital that you, as the caregiver, are comfortable doing at home stretches and exercises with your baby to reduce the risk of reattachment and reduce the risk of having to have the procedure repeated. We will provide you with all the information and help you practice the stretches to sufficiency. We will also request up to 3 post-op appointments to evaluate healing and feeding improvement.
